Eddie Katz: My Journey Through Music

From Progressive Metal to Meditation

Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, but my relationship with it hasn’t always been smooth. As a young child, I was practically forced to take piano lessons, something I absolutely hated at the time. Little did I know that those early lessons would lay the foundation for a lifelong musical journey—one that would take me from the roaring energy of heavy metal to the tranquil world of meditation music.

A Rare Look Into My Past

I don’t normally share my musical past with anyone. In fact, I’ve often hesitated to talk about my background because I worry it might turn people off. Meditation music and heavy metal seem like worlds apart, and I sometimes wonder if my history in progressive and heavy music might not align with what people expect from me now. On top of that, I’m a deeply introverted person—I don’t like to talk about myself or my accomplishments, and opening up like this is really difficult for me. But I also recognize that my journey has shaped the music I create today, and maybe sharing it will provide deeper insight into why Pathway to Perception exists in the way that it does.

The Metal Years

As a teenager, my true passion for music was ignited—not through classical piano, but through the raw intensity of heavy metal. I picked up the bass and immersed myself in the world of bands, rehearsals, and live performances. I played in several groups growing up, but my first real breakthrough came with Vaudeville. In 1994, we released To Dimension Logic, an album that was well-received and solidified our place in the progressive metal scene.

Following my time with Vaudeville, I formed Where Echoes End, a band that put out three full-length albums. The creative drive didn’t stop there, and I later founded Mechanical Organic, where we released multiple well-received albums. Each project taught me something new about songwriting, production, and the emotional depth that music can carry.

The Birth of Pathway to Perception

During my time with Mechanical Organic, I began collaborating with my brother-in-law, Anton Dolencic, on a completely different kind of musical endeavor—Pathway to Perception. Together, we wrote and recorded Sacred Flame, Kingdom of the Sun, and Crystal Cave. Our efforts paid off when we secured a deal with New World Music, who pressed and distributed our first two releases throughout Australia and the UK. Getting signed felt like a huge achievement, and for a while, things were moving in the right direction.

However, as time passed, Pathway to Perception slowly faded into dormancy. Life got in the way, and Anton found himself unable to fully commit to the project. Though I would occasionally revisit it, the momentum had disappeared.

A New Chapter

In late 2023, something shifted. I made the decision to reboot Pathway to Perception, this time with a fresh approach—one that was entirely independent. Gone were the record labels, the CD pressings, the industry red tape. Instead, I embraced a new era of creative freedom.

Now, Pathway to Perception is a one-man operation. I write the meditation scripts, compose the ambient soundtracks, add sound effects, create the artwork, and release everything through my own website. There’s no waiting for others, no creative conflicts—just pure, uninterrupted expression. The process flows seamlessly, and I’ve never felt so creatively liberated.

Since relaunching the project, I’ve learned an incredible amount about music production, from sound design to mixing and mastering. The progress I’ve made in the past couple of years has been transformative, and I’m excited to keep improving with each new release.

Moving Forward

Looking back, I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come—from the struggles, the setbacks, and the countless rejections, to finally finding my true creative voice. Pathway to Perception is more than just a project; it’s a reflection of my journey, my resilience, and my passion for music in its purest form.

And now, I invite you to walk this path with me. Let’s continue this journey together—one meditation at a time.
